| Abstract: | SUMMARIES. Water-sensitive modern dyes used for writing or marking on records can be transferred into a water-proof condition by use of ionic fixatives. Thus, aqueous restoration techniques like washing or resizing can be applied even on documents with large areas of modern inks, stamps or copying-ink pencils. The volatile fixative cyclododecane is used for local water-protection of small endangered areas. The application of the fixatives Rewin ELTM, Mesitol NBSTM, and cyclododecane is described at the example of the conservation of a complex 20th century record, thereby avoiding any diffusion of a multitude of different inks and colours found on every single sheet of paper. CONCLUSION. As a result we can state: using the recently suggested types of ionic fixatives, Re-win EL (cationic) and Mesitol NBS (anionic), together with the volatile fixative cyclododecane it is possible to prepare even the most heterogeneous modem record consisting of water-sensitive modern inks, coloured pencils and stamps, for aqueous cleaning and deacidification or applying water-containing adhesives. The application is easy, does not need expensive equipment, and is free from hazardous solvents. We succeeded in treating every sheet individually with a variety of methods. This is time consuming and, considering the usual amount of modern files, quite expensive. Further studies will concentrate on the possibilities to reduce the time needed in a variety of techniques in order to accelerate the treatment. |
