Description
Abstract:SUMARRIES. In order to find appropriate methods to restore some architectural drawings from the beginning of the twentieth century that were mounted on paperboard these drawings were analysed for fibre, adhesive, additives, inks, colours and biological infestation. Possible methods of restoration were tested with artificially aged papers of our time. The final method that seemed to be most suitable was dry detaching, flattening by pressure (2.02 MPa) and mending on the suction table using solvent-soluble cellulose derivatives (Klucel G).
CONCLUSION. The problem posed by the restoration of tracing paper mainly consists of the need to work in the almost total absence of water, owing to the dimensional instability of the paper. Tracing paper cannot be immersed in water and cannot tolerate the use of aqueous glues and adhesives. Nevertheless, the combination of tests performed prior to the restoration and the patient execution of the restoration itself made it possible to devise a method capable of producing results that can be considered quite satisfactory, as can be seen in the photographic documentation.
