| Abstract: | SUMARRIES. After a survey of the methods lo reinforce brittle paper, the author describes one of them, paper-splitting, in detail. Two sheets of support paper coated with gelatine are put onto both surfaces of the object to be split and separated at the right moment, when there is sufficient bonding between support papers and the object and sufficient loosening, caused by humidity, in the inner part of the object. A core of thin paper is inserted, using starch paste or methyl cellulose, and the support papers are removed using a proteolytic enzyme. The dangers of the process are discussed as well as ethical reservations against it. |
