| Summary: | SUMMARIES. Library preservation in the broad meaning of the term may be pursued when there is general awareness of the value of the possessed items and the state of their preservation. For individual items or specific small groups of items sent for conservation treatment a description of their state of preservation is based upon a Conservation Treatment Chart. Most of the 19th and 20th century collections were produced on poor quality paper. As the demand for paper grew the method of its production changed. The items from that period are quite homogeneous in terms of technologies and material used. The consequence of this is the always similarly developing process of destruction affecting mainly the paper. The description of the state of preservation of this group of items will contain identical elements and the same characteristic features of destruction. In this case one may reach for other, simplifying and generalizing methods of evaluating the level of preservation of big groups of items. Applicable here are results of research conducted by William Barrow, post-1970 American research, German, French and English, and finally Polish research. The proper method of evaluating the state of preservation of 19th and 20th century holdings should enable the development of a plan of saving the book collection and completion of other analyses concerning such holdings.
