| Summary: | SUMMARIES. The true pearl among music manuscripts held in the Treasury of the National Library is collection of 24 Preludes Op. 28 by Fryderyk Chopin. In 1996 I performed conservation treatment of the leaves of this unique manuscript. The work was a major challenge for me as all previous conservation treatment was performed forty four years ago by Professor Bonawentura Lenart, regarded as the father of the Polish school of book conservation. During the systematic surveys of the items from the National Library Treasury conservators were increasingly concerned about the growing changes taking place in the paper itself and the handwritten music score. The changes noticed posed a serious threat to the manuscript thus a decision was made to conduct indispensible analyses and perform conservation treatment once again. It ought to be stressed that efficient conservation treatment was possible thanks to the use by B. Lenart of reversible glues and methods, and natural material. The principles of conservation work, introduced at that time by this pioneer of conservation are commonly used today. This example proves also how important it is in conservation work to use tested methods and good quality material. The discussed conservation treatment was financed by the State Committee of Scientific Research and was carried out as part of the project of conservation of treasures from the National Library collections pursued in the Department of Conservation of Library Collections since 1993. |
