Description
Summary:SUMMARIES. "Absence of a long-term conservation concept leads to the annihilation of heritage items documenting what mankind has created" - these words were said by W. J. Welsh in 1986. Though over 10 years have passed since that time the above statement is still valid in many countries, also in Poland, and the absence of the concept of mass conservation is drawing nearer and nearer the tragic effect of neglecting the problem of preservation of 19th and 20th century collections. Mass paper deacidification is one of the most important technologies of saving collections in their original form on a mass scale. Introduction of mass conservation technologies requires major funds exceeding by far the budgets of individual, even the biggest libraries or archives worldwide. Research and development, as well as implementation of new technologies in the area of library conservation, its mechanization and increased capacity has recently become a worldwide trend. The basic thing in developing library conservation programmes should be the choice of strategy to be pursued by the state. The last year, taking example from other countries, key tenets were developed of a strategie government programme for libraries and archives in Poland. Moreover, the authors touched upon the issue of permanent paper.
