The paper was prepared for a session marking the 75th anniversary of the Municipal Library in Toruń held in December 10-11, 1998 and presented in the part of the conference on "Preservation of Library Collections and their Protection against the Effects of Natural Disasters". It is an attempt to sum up the reflections on this matter which came up during the operation of rescuing books and documents during the 1997 flood. I hope that the outlined problems will help all libraries to develop disaster preparedness programmes starting from modification of curricula for future librarians, museum specialists and conservators of heritage items. |
