|a SUMMARIES. This publication discusses the origin and presents the timetable of events that led to the creation of a long-term government programme (LGP) called: "Acid Paper. Mass-scale saving of endangered Polish Library and Archive Collections." The long-term government programme coordinated by the National Library covers in its scope the following projects: ˙ diagnosis of the extent of degradation of a collection caused by acid substances and biological corrosion, ˙ preventive measures which include the production of archive paper, legislative work and microfilming, ˙ elimination of threats which include deacidification and the strengthening of paper.The government programme assumes adoption of rational and coordinated actions in cultural heritage protection against a phenomenon that specialists call "acid paper".Action programmes implementing specific projects were developed by the National Library, the Central Board of State Archives, the Jagiellonian University, the Mikołaj Kopernik University, and the Cellulose-Paper Institute. The programme was consulted with the Ministry of Culture and National Heritage, the Ministry of National Education, the Ministry of the Economy, and the State Committee for Scientific Research. The long-term government programme was approved by the Council of Ministers in its decision dated November 17th, 1999.
