Description
Abstract:Summaries. A new kind of mass deacidification process has been developed by the Battelle Institute in Frankfurt am Main. The Battelle mass deacidification treatment is a substantially improved version of the Wei T'o process and uses a solution of alkoxides of magnesium and titanium in hexamethyldisiloxane as the deacidification compound. After a successful test period, the Battelle equipment was set up in the German Library in Leipzig and has been in operation there since June 1994.
Conclusions. With the Battelle mass deacidification equipment the German Library has an excellent tool for saving their stock of books for acid deterioration. This new process allows the effective deacidification of a large number of books and archival materials. It has no adverse effects on the treated materials and is environmental safe. Therefore this new technology is a milestone in the preservation in libraries and archives.
