Description
Abstract:Conclusions. Exhibitions are vehicles for education and pleasure. There is every reason to believe that they will continue in popularity. The understanding of how exhibitions can result in damage to collections is growing. This understanding will help in preventing certain kinds of damage. With increased interest in exhibitions and conservation, new techniques and products are becoming available to make this objective more attainable. The responsible exhibit curator or conservator understands both the public benefits brought by exhibition and the need to protect the items on display. In some ways it is possible to accommodate what seem to be mutually exclusive goals, by compromising where it is safe and admitting limitations when there is no safe alternative. The underlying motivation for exhibition must be a strong concern for the safe enjoyment of the world's artistic and historic legacy while on exhibition and a hope to pass that legacy on to succeeding generations intact and in as good a condition as possible.
