Description
Abstract:Conclusions. To maintain the physical strength of palm leaf objects, its stiffness has to be checked time to time. Change of appearance can also be a significant parameter in evaluating the state of objects. The results of chemical treatment show that alkaline treatment should not be provided unless it is very essential. Water and some organic solvents can be used in conservation treatment to remove unwanted stains, dust and dirt in palm leaf objects. To keep the leaves soft and flexible clove, camphor and eucalyptus oils can be used, whereas neem, citronella and lemon grass can also be used to preserve palm leaf objects.
Summaries. Palm leaf is the typical writing support in the Indian and Indian-influenced cultural area. Samples of historic and modern palm leaf are analysed with regard to some physical and chemical properties determining the usability and the ageing behaviour of the material. As a result, some suggestions are given how to treat palm leaf objects to prolong their life.
