| Abstract: | Summaries. Cross-sections are used to examine layering and the morphology of layers in paintings. The interpretation of the information is dependent upon the expertise of the observer. Similarly, the preparation of cross-sections is entirely at the discretion of the worker. Proper preparation and storage is important, as the samples inevitably will be revisited at a later date. Although this paper only deals with easel paintings, cross-sections have been used in all branches of conservation and are integral to investigative conservation work. |
