Description
Abstract:Summaries. The British Library has sponsored the development of a mass paper-strengthening process. This process simultaneously arrests the deterioration of paper and restores its strength, so that fragile books can again be used. The process can be applied to bound volumes. The volumes are exposed to a mixture of monomers and irradiated at very low dose rates. The monomers polymerize and the polymers are uniformly deposited on and throughout the cellulose fibres. The appearance of the paper is unchanged, but a weight increase of about 20 % occurs. The process is still in an experimental stage and a pilot plant will need to be developed.
