| Abstract: | Summaries. The use of methyl magnesium carbonate has been examined as an alternative to barium hydroxide for nonaqueous deacidification of paper. Nonaqueous and aqueous deacidification agents were compared by assessing their effects on the tensile strength, pH, colour and aging characteristics of filrer paper and ninetheenth-century printed book paper. Methyl magnesium carbonate was shown to be an effective nonaqueous deacidifying agent. The commercial product, PHizz, has been found to be preferable to methyl magnesium carbonate produced on-site in the laboratory. |
