| Abstract: | SUMMARIES. Air conditioning systems are possibly the ideal place for the proliferation of micro-organisms and the spread of contaminated aerosols in the ambient air. Inhalation of such bio aerosols can cause health problems for people and they can also damage cultural heritage. The aim of this presentation is to examine the technical factors involved in the microbiological contamination of air conditioning systems, and describe preventive and remedial measures to minimize the risk of this occurring. CONCLUSION. The question of the relationship between air conditioning, microorganisms and health is complex, for it requires concurrently technical, microbiological and medical data; therefore a multidisciplinary approach is necessary. The positive point of the existence of these relationships is that the microbial contamination of air conditioning systems is not a fatality but appears to be clearly linked with technical factors, which leads to possible remedial and preventive actions based on technical changes. |
