Description
Abstract:Conclusions. Application of aqueous-alcoholic and alcoholic carbamide solutions when preserving parchment is possible. 10% concentration solutions have no destructive effect on collagen. Parchment elasticity and strength properties after treatment with aqueous-alcoholic and especially alcoholic carbamide solutions were preserved at a higher level than in a reference specimen for the complete period of ageing. Application of the above organic solvents to clean parchment did not result in the course of ageing in a transparency increase and loss in deformation parchment properties.
Summaries. A test series was performed on specimens of (modern) parchment to evaluate the effect on pH, optical and mechanical properties of carbamide (10% in water and/or alcohol) and solvent treatment, immediately after the treatment and additionally after accelerated ageing at 80°C. As a general result, we found that the named treatments have no adverse side effects and may be performed if necessary.
